Call for papers on archives

Today I came across this very interesting Call for Papers for an International Conference on Archives that takes place in September in East London. The National Heritage Council describes the concept behind the conference as follows:

‘The conference comes in the wake of South Africa entering its second decade of democracy. This democracy was preceded by a liberation struggle that was waged in the country and the world over. The heritage of these many pockets of memories lies strewn all over the world. To preserve the evidence of this heritage and acknowledge the chievements of South Africa’s democracy, the NHC is hosting an International Conference on Archives in September 2012.

The collection, organisation, and conservation of archival material are the foundational imperatives of archival practise. In the preoccupation with these elemental requirements however, one can often lose sight of the reasons for making this significant investment in time and resources. Many would argue that building and managing an archive is not an end in itself – to be relevant and meaningful, it must serve a wider purpose. ‘
